Maybe use it to grow plants? lol

I don't think it gives off UVB.

how many watts is it? I tried to look it up online but could only find 400W ones, which I feel would fry a turtle. Also, is it safe to use with the socket you have? Nothing I saw suggests UVB is emitted from the bulb.

I believe they are targeting a different area of the light spectrum and color temperature. UVB ranges from 280-315nm and this spectrum "Includes harmful UVB ultraviolet light which causes plants colors to fade." So I doubt it will be of any use for you or your turtle.

Its a hard decision when a parent goes out to buy something for a pet, and the child doesn't want it because it's not the right one. Very hard to tell a parent that you don't like what you bought them, even though you know it was good intention. They will assume you don't appreciate you. =(

very nice of your dad to care enough to try and help! I hear so many stories on here of parents who don't give a rip and refuse to buy the proper size tank or bulbs to keep a turtle healthy. make sure you let your dad know you appreciate it a lot, but ask if you can return it to get one designed for reptiles instead of plants.

My brother bought an Eastern painted, and my husband and I took him to the pet store to buy everything he needed. When we got back, my dad (who usually will have nothing to do with my brother) had built this extravagant basking dock that took up 3/4 of the swimming area. It was so hard to tell him it wasn't going to work and we were going to use the ZooMed floating dock we had bought. I felt terrible but told my dad I was very appreciative that he had spent the time to cut the wood/ build the dock/etc. I felt really bad, but he understood, especially after reading the care sheet I had written up for my brother.
