General Care Discussion :: Releasing RES into the wild?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Hi, I have a friend who has two RES's, one is about 9" and the other around 6" and he needs to relocate and can't take them with him. I already have two of my own and can't take them but asked me if I knew if they could be released into the wild here in Portland Oregon in one of the rivers or lakes? I have no idea, any comments? I know there are wild turtles here but can a domesticated, if there is such a thing turtle, be set free? Any help is appreciated... Thanks! :?: :? :D

Nope! Did you read the releasing part in this website?

The poor RES probably could live in the wild and it might die.

and it does survive, RES are already an invasive species, they're already wiping out native turtle species. Plus, it might be illegal in your country.

Maybe you can give him to a turtle adoption agency or to a good friend.

Releasing captive turtles into the wild is never an option and capturing wild turtles is frowned upon.

Here's a link with several links to help you look for a new home for the little fellas:

Good luck!

I lived in The Dalles Oregon for 8 year and the water in oregon is way to cold ALL year around. Please tell your friend to find another option.

I agree with what others already said here. Check out the website Steve recommended.

Once turtles get used to NOT hibernating, it is very hard for them to assimilate back into the wild. Not to mention, RES's are not native to Oregon. They are a southern turtle & their species is from Mississippi (and of no snow!).
