General Care Discussion :: Horrible News

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

One of my turtles began to act very lethargic one day. She would just sit on the basking dock and open her mouth at the air. I tried putting her in the water, and she would just swin very weakly at the surface. The next day, she was dead on the basking dock! And I think there was blood everywhere too! Right underneath here there was stains of red liquid. It was disgusting. I want to know what happened! She died in just a few days! Is my other turtle at danger as well?

From the sitting on the basking dock with an open mouth, sounds like RI. I'm assuming the red on the dock was poo and pee, the poo will change color depending on what you feed them. You didn't say anything about an injury that would have caused the blood on the dock. Is it possible your other turtle bit her?

Yes your other turtle is in danger as well, take him to the vet to get a check up asap.

Kate, I'm thinking the same. Either turtle 1 was sick or injured and then turtle 2 made things worse.

If there are no visible signs of injury, I would take turtle 1 to a vet for a necropsy. Your tank and filter should be thoroughly cleaned out and I would replace the filter media.

If the red was blood and there was no visible injury, it sounds to me like the turtle hemmoraged, why I don't know. A vet, would, though. I'm sorry you lost your turtle.

Ouch, it sounds like a miserable way to die for the little guy. :(
Hope your other turtle is fine.

the other turtle is doing fine, looks very lively and is showing no signs. I do't think it was RI because the other turtle is fine, and its been a week since the other turtle showed symptons. I think it hemooraged. What does that mean?

Also, Im pretty sure it is blood, as the poo is solid, and this was a lot of liquid. Maybe it was pee, but I doubt it. Anyways, it didn;t seem like there was any sign of biting either. Guess her death remains a mystery

Unless you really want to know, you could take the turtle to a herp vet, and get a necropsy.

I'm sorry the hear about your loss, keep a close eye on the other turtle, he/she needs you now.

To hemmorhage means that there is a excessive bleeding from the blood vessels. There can be a number of causes, a vet could help solve the mystery.
