General Care Discussion :: leaving turts for a few days

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I have to go out of town this Friday and won't be back until Monday. My roommate is never home so I can't count on him to look after Cheech & Chong. He might come by maybe once during that time and feed them.

So, I'm asking: I'm assuming they sell some kind of timer switch I can plug the lamps into so they turn on and off by themselves, right?

Also, I could probably leave a nice piece of carrot on the clip for them to eat while I'm gone, after all, the turts can go without food for a couple of days.

Right?

It's fine for you to leave them for a couple of days. A piece of carrot in the clip would be good. And yes, you can get a timer at a hardware store like Lowes or Home Depot. They have both expensive ones and cheap ones - the one I got was only abou $5 and it works fine.

Ask your roommate to look in on them when he happens to be in and if there's a problem - turtles fighting, filter not working or something - come on this site and we'll try to help.

Maybe something tasty too like Anacharis would be nice. My girl LOVES it. I leave her for a few days every now and then and she's been fine.

A few pieces of cuttlebone would be good as well.

Yeah I do the same every weekend. I feed them right before I leave on friday and put in a copule sprigs of anachris, a piece of fruit, and extra chunks of cuttlebone. The lights are also on a timer. The minute I walk back in the door sunday night I see a couple of bouncing turtles ready for some pellets!

Cool... I'll do that, I've never fed them anacharis so this should be the time to try it.

Thanks!

Mine love anacharis, but it can be messy. They tend to rip it apart while they are eating it and it can clog up some filters a little quicker than normal. I only feed it as a treat when I know I'll be changing the filter shortly.

Well, I came back and found the turts doing just fine. They ate all of the rosy reds except for one, the whole piece of carrot I left and the anacharis completely vanished... only the rubber weight at the bottom is what's left of it.

All good!
