Sometimes I have to cover Nyx's tank for her to bask. I cover the end that she looks out to see me because if I am in my room playing on the computer or what not she will just beg non stop. Once I cover the end of the tank then she stops begging and gets up on her dock. I also have to cover her at night or else she won't sleep. As long as the tank isn't over heating then it should be fine. My hatchlings warmed up to me after about 2 weeks, but I hatched mine so I don't know if store bought babies are different or not. They get all excited when they see me now

Covering the tank shouldn't cause it to overheat, especially if you aren't covering the top. THe water heater should turn off when the water reaches a certain temp and turn back on when it drops, so if the towel happens to insulate it a bit, the water heater just does less work
New turtles can be shy, so if that makes them more inclined to bask, go ahead and use it. If they are getting bolder and will bask without it, then leave the towel down. When I first had my turtle I put cardboard around the end of the tank when the basking perch was so she would feel alone and more relaxed when basking, I think it helped her adjust. Now she basks whenever, whether people are present or not... it was just a matter of her getting comfortable.

thanx for ur info it helped alot i jus dont want them to get to attached to not seeing neone and then be shy all the time...but i thik ill leave it down and leave the room ii mean i have left it off and thye have basked so i think im gunna do without it and if not ill take the platform out and let them bask on the other rocks for now i mean they have a lil cave so if they want to hide they can use that but they use the platform alot...so i think ill try taking it out for a few hrs on a day and see wuth they do ...when its not there and how tey will react and if that helps them to bask a lil more .....

thanx guys..i rally happy i found this site..its helped me soo much and everythign that i have read and learned i alwasy talk about turltes now hehe my b..f gets soo mad...he says all i wanna do its talk about them..in a way its true they are soo cute...well like i said im new to this wole thing and i like freak out cuz im not as experienced as all u other guys....and i get scared really easy i want them to grow big and be happy i see all these pics of all these turtles that are soo big i cant even wait for mine to be that big <3 ...and i only want wuts best for them.....thanx for all ur help
