General Care Discussion :: food causing muggy water?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Sat Oct 06, 2007 4:53 pm   food causing muggy water?

so i posted a couple of weeks ag about my disappointment with my cannister filter. people mentioned that i should let it sit for a while and my water will clear up sooner or later. still no change. i have done weekly partial water changes and it stays relatively clear but then goes back to being muggy.

my question now is that someone from the pet store said that feeding sera pellets as opposed to Reptomin will make the tank less dirty. is this true or is he just making a sales pitch?

I haven't seen that brand, but do you think the reptomin is fouling the water?

Reptomin won't do it (Reptomin is pellets by the way) in and of itself. Lots of people on here feed their turtles Reptomin, including myself, without a problem.

What could cause a problem though is having leftover food that stays in the water. If you are feeding your turtle in his/her tank and there's food left over, you should scoop it out to keep it from fouling the water.

the pet shop person was suggesting that the pellets were fouling the water. i doubted him as many people on this forum use it. just wanted to confirm.

i have an eheim 2215 filter for my 40 gallon tank (2/3 full).

the guy did manage to sell me some carbon and ammonia neutralizing crystals to add to my filter to help clear out the cloudiness.

did i get sold?

No, I think what he sold might help.

Perhaps you have a bacterial bloom?

not sure if it is bacteria bloom.
there is no smell,
just cloudy water.

I use nutrafin's Turtle Clean and Seachem's water conditioner.

Are you conditioning the new water you put in after your weekly partial water change?

I would feed your turtle pellets in a separate pan of water, outside the tank. I have a filter in my tank, but I still feed outside the tank because I don't like any leftover food bits in the tank. No matter how quickly they eat the pellets, there are still going to be small pellet particles that dissolve in the water and can foul the water. I have observed this many times with my frog-tank (I do partial changes for him 2x a week & he has no filter so it can really build up!).
