General Care Discussion :: Tobi is AT IT AGAIN!!! NO KIDDING!!!

Guys?! What the heck? I dont know what to do????

She is acting gravid AGAIN~! For anyone who dont know...Tobi is 4 years old, 10" long and 7.5 wide. She laid 4 eggs Sept. 9th and then 6 more around the 28th or so... We had her xrayed and there were ONLY 2 in the xray to start with!! (Then she ended up having 10 total!) (Not fertile BTW)

AnyHooo....She is NOT basking AGAIN, and has been swimming the full side of the back of the tank; back and forth repeatedly ALLLL DAY! What the ?!!!*

How can this happen?! Does anyone know anything about HOW eggs actually get in there (besides with a male)? Is it true that when space permits (as she lays) more are made? And OMG 10 for her 1st lay in her LIFE?!

I just dont know what to do with her?! I thought for SURE this time we would be done for a year or so!!! Anyone have ANY advice or knowledge on this?! Before we BOTH go nuts? I HATE to see her doing this again. 3 times is tooooo much in a month!

Ok...not to answer my own post; but as I was searching the net I found a site that said that adult females can lay up to 3 clutches a year at 6 - 10 eggs EACH! Ya'll think this is right!? I only thought once a year?! (Even though we are already OVER that...)

I think that's right. On the bright side - it probably means Tobi is a very healthy girl. And if it's any consolation, I think the people on here with older turtles that aren't around males say their girls hardly ever lay eggs any more. So maybe she'll slow down....some day.

ohhhhh wow! lol Thanks Spots...didnt like that answer..but if it is NORMAL behaviour...if she can manage; so can I. And thank God it is getting cooler outside! But MAN! This is nuts! lol

And YES I am glad she is a healthy girl! Must be! lol Ya know, that same site said that reducing the daily light, from 12 hours slowly down to 8 a day will slow down egg production.... ever heard of that before? I feel like without the light I would be doing her a diservice and it wouldnt be healthy....

Guess soon I may have more egg pix to show!

I don't know about the light. I just know what I've read - my turt's a boy. Hopefully someone else on here with experience can respond.

You are luckyyyyyyyyy lol Even tho I wouldnt trade Tobi for the world....but well...ya know....lol

And yes I hope someone with some experience on that will respond also!

I can completely relate. There were times when Sheba laid eggs 3x in a month and I thought I was going out of my mind! Everywhere from in the water to out of the water, under the bean bag, etc. There was one time where I changed her 55 gal tank water *twice* in the same week (this was many yrs ago....all that HAULING of water buckets....! Yipes!!!!!!!!!!!!).

Just do what you did before....take Tobi outside & let her lay her eggs. Sounds like she is a very healthy girl, and that also means you are a very good owner!

I think my Painted is gravid too. She laid the two eggs in June (that later became Gimli and Marvolo the super cute babies) and then a few weeks later she laid another that either broke or she tried eating. She has been really agitated lately. Hissing a lot of swimming back and forth but she also basks a lot. When I take her out of the tank (she wants out, she will beg and as soon as I put my hands in there she climbs into them and sits there until I put her on the floor) she walks around really slow sniffing just about every inch of the floor. If I try taking her outside she just starts running (I wonder if its because of the cooler temps?) so I bring her back inside and she starts sniffing again. I don't know what I can do for her either.... Silly girls and their eggs.

Tobi is STILL gravid and just not ready yet I dont think. (before she laid the other 2 times, she was totally uncontrollable! Nothing would calm her down in tank. She was like on SPEED, flapping, jumping, swimming, kicking everything, and trying HARD to escape tank!) She is still swimming back and forth like no ones business for hours...barely basking...if she goes to bask she tries to climb out of her tank or tries to slide off the basking area and gets wedged in sideways...it actually looks pretty funny. Her big ole body sideways with feet flapping trying to get out. Im glad Im home to watch her though. She can be pretty daring and crazy!

But still waiting for this to be over again...lol And I am glad this means she is healthy !! She sure LOOKS it!

Bumbys mom- That sounds so cute! Your turtle climbing into your hands until you take her out! Awwww..... The only thing I know to do is for Tobi to go outside. Cold or NOT. She has NEVER laid in the water, she is on the floor constantly and never tried to dig or lay, she has had a box of dirt and sand...nothing. Outdoors MUST be her preference...

Speaking of that..guess Ill take her out a bit. She is trying to kick her tank apart as I type this. We'll see what happens!!

Hey Bumby is there any chances of Nyx laying anymore fertile clutches? I've heard of female turtles being able to store sperm from a single mating for future use.

Fertile or not there will be no more turtles here I don't have the room for any more turtles which is unfortunate because they are so darn cute. I don't think they would hatch anyway it is getting pretty cold here and I don't have an incubator.
