Danial -- I had one do this when he was sick but not just in the mornings. This is a new one for me. They certainly know how to back up but they usually don't do it except to get turned around. Maybe someone else can give you a hand on this one. -- Good Luck!

My turtle does what mikee described - he will sometimes back up quickly as part of turning around. Also, when he's fluttering his rock, he moves back and forth in front of it. I've never seen him swimming backwards for more than a second or two. Does your turtle swim backwards for more than a second or two?

A while back someone posted a video of their hatchling doing that. I don't think he was sick, it was just a quirky behavior of his... so I'd keep an eye out for other symptoms but I wouldn't be overly concerned.
