General Care Discussion :: New to turtles, wondering how bad of shape mine is in.

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I don't see a problem with his skin. That dark grey/green color with pale stripes is normal for a grown up RES. :D You can look at pictures of lots of healthy RES in the photo section and you'll see while the little ones are bright green, the grown ups are usually very dark.

Just keep an eye on his skin. If he's lived in poor conditions and he's got a shell condition, he could possibly also start to exhibit skin problems. Hopefully not!

That last series of pics shows that her shell is in bad shape. but with the proper diet and a good setup, I'm sure she will recover, although it will take some time. She has definitely been fed way too much protein, plus the lack of proper lighting has made her shell worse.
Her eyes look clear and her skin color looks to be OK so I think you need to focus on diet and basking/lighting.......

The new filter is 200gph, so it should be enough to get by for now I think.

Her skin looked a bit worse a few days ago, but that was before she finished shedding. Glad to hear it looks ok to you guys. She seems to be basking fairly well now too, and I've been finding bits of scutes in her tank.

Great that she's shedding some of that off already!

A good number of those scutes really need to go---I can see layers that never shed.

She has nice clear eyes. A good diet, proper lighting, a good habitat and time will do a lot for her.
