silly question, but is there any way to tell the age of a turtle?

Not really. You can get a rough estimate by size, but the turtle's care can really impact the growth rate so it's a very rough estimate. Anything under 4'' is probably under a year old. After the first year they should only grow about an inch a year, so that's how you'd estimate a turtle larger than 4''.
