how long can my RES stay in cold water for?

reason i ask is i just broke my water heater when i was changing the water and wont be able to purchase a new heater until tomorrow

the water is really cold just now and didn't know if it was advisable to leave them in it overnight as the temperature will drop even further in the night

thanks in advance

How cold is it? Anything below 70 can be a problem

its sitting at 68 just now but i think i will try and fill the tank with semi-warm water for a temp measure, just wish there was someplace open just now where i could go buy a heat lamp from

Can you change out some of the cold water for some warm water with a bucket?

SR1981-- Please be careful about putting warm water in the tank all at once. One you may crack the glass in the tank and two your turtle does not need quick temp changes. I have stated hot cold hot cold is not good for the turtle. Try and use a light bulb above or leave your basking light on until you get a good heater. Try and get one that has a plastic outer shell as when they get bigger they have a tendency to break them.

filled the tank with warmish water and was careful about just throwing very hot water in as i suspected it would crack the glass ,

the old heater broke at the worst time possible ( 10 minute from the nearest pet store closing <-- 15 minute drive i will get a new heater first thing in the morning.

both res i have are already quite large (8 years old, i just adopted them) so i know i will have to get a sturdy heater

i haven't slept and have been going in and checking them every couple of hours am i overreacting? its 4 in the morning here and i could do with some shut eye

Wow! What a night!

Can you cover the tank with it's recently warmed water with a blanket? that will help hold in the heat. When morning comes you can turn on the heat light bulb and that will help.
