General Care Discussion :: ? to anyone with male RES.....

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Fri Dec 07, 2007 2:40 am   ? to anyone with male RES.....

Can anyone tell me what is ummmm "normal" for male RES to show their "thingy's"....lol

I just saw Scatters the other nite, confirming the BOY situation.... and now he seems to show it alot (since he knows its there lol) I dont know. But when I hold him (he is still scared) it comes out and stays most the whole time until I return him to the water. Also, if we stare at him in the tank it flips out there too. And when he "flutters".....

Is this normal?!

I know it isnt prolapsed...it goes all the way back in. But it DOES stay out a bit too long.....(well, for me..icky...)

Help?!

Is he fanning when he's in the water? I really can't say how often they do it... I'm sure its when they feel like it. I don't see my male do it as often as before... but then he was a shy flasher before.

lol

Yeah he does do it in the water. Im not sure how much though. It just ummmm slides out sometimes when he doesnt even see me too.

Otherwise, its when he is nervous Im pretty sure.

You think that is normal?

I just thought since it is the 1st time Ive seen IT, he is "showing" it off?! And tell me it DOES lessen as he ages...?! I dont care to see it that much, ya know? lol And it is HUGE! As long and wider than his little tail. lol

It looks like he is about to POO...then BOOM...out it comes! I was praying for a boy...ya know since Tobi is an egg magnet...but dang...ewwwww....lol I can deal with it though especially if he stops doing it so much!

And as for fanning....how much does that occur? Only when fluttering to his shadow?

As long as he puts it away when he's done, then I think he's fine :)

I've only had one male, so I can only offer my own observation about him... he seems to do it less, but I really can't be sure since I can't observe him as much (I had to put him into a stock tank).

My Spot did a fair amount of flashing when he went through puberty (I guess that's what you'd call it) but he doesn't do it much any more. When he was young, he'd always flash it when I rinsed him off in the sink which he still does occasionally but not all the time. He'd sometimes flash it in his tank too but he never does that any more.

Cammee, I don't know why it is but your turtles both seem to have exceptionally high harmone levels. Something in the water???

Is Toni gravid AGAIN? I've never heard of a female laying as many eggs as she is. Maybe you should see the vet again - maybe she's got a switch flipped that needs to flip back.

Turtley's only done it twice that i've seen, both times when he's in his tank flirting with his rock. I'm glad he doesn't make a habit of it (not yet anyway!) it's a little creepy. Hopefully your little guy will get bored with it soon!

I have also noticed this in my Turbo in the past month or two. Not only does he make woopie with the filter...lol he has had a major attitude change. When I try to put food in his tank he shoots out of the water like a great white and tries to bite me. He could care less about the food until i step away. If i get near the tank he stalks me waiting to try to bite me. What could have gotten into him? Is this normal?

Back to the woopie making... It is so funny. The first time I seen this I knew he was a male. I have a waterfall filter with a long extention to the bottom of his tank. He wil swim under the extention and let the filter suck to the back of his shell. He will then let his back legs lay straight back behind him. As he gets all relaxed...out come the beast. It is so funny but gross. Just thought I would share my story...lol

any suggestions on the major attitude change?
oh...he has also been trying to exscape. He spends most of the day trying to get out. ???????????

SpotsMama: Good to know that HOPEFULLY it eases after "puberty".... lol
And yes, I got some good info from a breeder and specialist of RES and Alligator Snappers a few miles from here. He told me that it was totally fine that Tobi was laying so many eggs/gravid etc. That since she is inside she has gotten her internal clock screwed up. He said that the only problem would be if she DIDNT lay and she was gravid. Sooooo...Im not worrying yet. And she IS gravid again...but it is sooo cold and sleeting, etc... she will not lay outside. So Im still praying she lays in her tank!!! I let her walk the house a few times a day. So we will see.

Tattoo: That is funny! lol And yeah I think it is kinda gross too! About the attitude change... I wouldnt say it was abnormal. Some RES change alot! My boy is nice one day, mean another and very scared ALOT! lol

TurtleObsession28: Oh YES...BOY RES have WEENERS.....BIG ONES! ;)
