Turtles, especially when they are little, do like to squeeze themselves into tight places, especially to sleep. The risk is that they will get stuck underwater and drown. The only way to get them to stop is to 'turtle proof" your tank - make sure there is no place that they can can get stuck. You may need to rearrange things to accomplish this.
My turtle stuck his head and front feet in the bottom of a little plaster toy alligator once and couldn't get loose. I heard him clanking around and got him out and took him with the alligator still on his head into where my husband was. I couldn't get him loose - he was stuck tight as a drum. My husband tried to break the alligator by hitting it with a hammer and chisle and he finally popped out. If I hadn't been there to hear him clanking around he'd be dead today.
