I hear the hissing sound too...when I move it from it's water to give it a bath, but the sound I hear when it's moving around sometimes is definitely a whistling sound.

Spotsmama, I read that you said above "When a turtle is less than 4" long he can have as many pellets in a day as would fit inside his head" .. what happens when they're past 4" long..

After a turtle is 4" long you should cut back to the amount of pellets that would fit in his hollow head every OTHER day instead of every day.

Since my grown turtle enjoys his mealtime so much I still feed him every day but only give him a half a headfull of pellets at a time.

WAIT! Ok. Here's the situatuion break down. Our hatchlings my friend are very much alike. My hatcling Cujo likes to bask. A LOT! and swims 90% of the time on the surface of the water. He has a great appetite (only for treats and lettuce). When he swims it has a very(VERY) minor tilt. Latley he has been in the water way more. Also when he swims he does dropp or sink he floats. My other hatcling sinks and spends 90% of the day under water on the tank floor. He has a very small appetite. They are completly diffrent!
Also. This site does tends to exagerate sympotms as you can tell from one of my earlier posts (syptoms)

Back to the turtle's whistling noise---I've heard of some turtles making this type of sound when extending the head quickly out of the water and the turtles were not ill. Why they did it was a mystery, some thought it had something to do with the nasal passage and how it was constructed. If your turtle has no other symptoms and eats well and is active, I wouldn't worry about it. Just keep an eye on it in case he exhibits other unusual behavior.

I've heard my grown cooter & RES both make a hissing noise. Twice now when I've removed Mercer (RES) from the pond for maintenance and put him in a large pot he's made noises - mostly a steady low pitched kind of grunting, but also an occassional squeaking noise. Hard to explain, but I know it was NOT his nails scraping (that noise was constant & in the background) and I was right next to him listening. Both times he was pretty stressed out & trying VERY hard to escape. He's not sick at all - first time I heard this was about 8 mos ago, then about 2 mos ago also.

Oh okay. I've heard the hissing sound too, when I lift Toutolina up. It's almost like she's angry! :-D

General brownie: if your turtle yawns while basking that could be a symptom of a respiratory infection. You should keep your eye out for other symptoms like crooked swimming and loss of appetite. To be on the safe side, raise your water temp to 79-80.
