General Care Discussion :: Hi! Question about filter noise and BACON

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Wed Dec 19, 2007 11:44 am   Hi! Question about filter noise and BACON

Hi there! Haven't been by in a long time--things have been good for the little guys:) but now I have two questions

1. my fiance can't STAND the noise of the waterfall filters. Does anyone here have the same problem? And if so, how can it be solved?

2. This weekend, Scott wanted to give the guys a treat and...he threw in little (bite size) bacon pieces and a tiny amount of (cooked) egg--not a whole egg, just a bit off the edge of his b'fast sandwich. Well, Herman loved the bacon SO much. He swam around with it in his mouth like it was a prize: back and forth, back and forth, head up, all excited. At last he ate it. Scott called me in to see this, and I told him that MIGHT not be the best idea. The egg was gone in about three seconds. Herman and Lily BOTH loved this. Now I know too much protien is bad for them but... is this okay as a treat, now and then? Like once a month? I naturalyl assume it's bad. But that's just the way I am. But once I saw how happy Hermie was... I wonder if it would be okay to do now and then?

All advice much appreciated. :) Thanks!

I dont know about feeding turtles pork but someone else might. The only way your going to solve the water fall sound is by filling the tank up more or get a different style filter like a in the tank filter or a canister filter.

Thanks. That was my concern, the fact that it was PORK.

I think there are other ways of makign the filter more quiet. I remember reading about little tricks people used one time when I was on here. There was one involving binder clips, but I can't remember what they clipped to it... Anyone?

Perhaps I can silicone something on to it? Has anyone tried this and do you know if the silicone would hold up under the constant stream of water?

Hey Kikicool! Haven't seen you around in a long while. :P

I've read someone here mention using a piece of plastic glued under the overflow part of the filter and extending down at a slight angle into the water. That way the water coming out of the filter just runs down the plastic into the water without the big splash.

As far as the bacon and eggs, it's probably about as unhealthy for the turtles as it is for us humans. So I'd guess that once in a while won't kill them. :)

^I tried that once and it didn't work. Rexi managed to hit it so hard she ripped the plastic right off.

Thanks, DavidY! Yes I've been a bit MIA. I want to know where people find these random pieces of plastic. and Vtolds, sounds like Rexi didn't like this solution, huh? Well, maybe even if I could glue it just to above the water, it would dull the sound to a trickle. I don't mind it at all. It's the fiance who is losing his mind. Can't afford a canister just yet. Will have to check out the plastic thing. Vtolds, i'll let you know if my turts get to it if I have it an inch or so above water level.

In fact, I'll keep everyone posted. Now I just have to find said random piece o' plastic...

You could try using some of that plastic mesh stuff that they sell at crafts stores for cross stitching I think. It's kind of flexible too so if the turtle bumps against it it won't be as likely to snap off.

i haven't seen either of you 2 in awhile. :) Merry Christmas!

I cut the noise down from my filters when I added the above tank basking area. Now the tank is filled to the top, so that water's not falling very far.

Merry Christmas to you, too!! I'm jealous of that above-tank area. So are my turts. You should sell those, you know!! I think I will try that mesh stuff--sounds like a great idea!! Thanks :)

thanks kiki! i actually did sell a few of them, but I've since moved and am no longer near the shop i was makin them at. the astroturf is working out ok, it's gradually shredding tho. if i did it again I'd probably use that reptile carpet. that stuff looks pretty cool are more durable.

kikicool -- I would suggest that you purchase a canister filter/pump. They are quiet and easy to clean. They can be put out of the way and no one has to look at it. It is as if "out of sight, out of mind" !!

I'd skip the bacon, period. (I wouldn't give pork, and bacon is just plain fatty.) I do give my turts bits of hard-boiled egg whites on the rare occasion, though.
