i want to know what is the average size of a 1 year old turtle.

I think they are suppose to be around 6 inches or so and then after that they grow a inch or so a year depending on the conditions and feeding.

Yes, it all depends on the feeding or if you turtle is male or female. But I think I read somewhere that the average size is around 4".

It depends on genetics and environment, but on average 4 inches in the first year is ok.
6 inches would mean your turtle is growing a bit too fast.

Genetics do play a role, but because captive RES are fed (and sometimes overfed) a nutrient dense diet, many are about 4 inches (shell length without the curve) at a year. However, if at a year a RES is smaller (3.5 or even closer to 3 inches), as long as the turtle is otherwise healthy, this is not necessarily bad (and may, in fact, be preferable). Growth much over 4 inches is usually due to a diet too high in protein and/or overfeeding (which isn't good).

Is your turtle a RES or - like your signature says - a Hieroglyphic river cooter?

I don't know about a Hiero cooter, but my peninsula cooter grew MUCH faster than my RES, and that species grows larger as a rule. Try a search for your species & get specific info.
