General Care Discussion :: All of a sudden aggressive and scared

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

In the past month Nyxie has been really bitey which is completely unlike her but today she took it to another level. She used to beg to come out of her tank and then she would follow me around the house for a bit and then walk back to her tank for me to put her in. I decided to get her out of the tank today and put her on the floor. As soon as i sat her down she bolted underneath of my bed and just sat there. When I went to grab her she started hissing very loudly at me and then sucked her head completely in her shell and would not come out. I put her back in the tank and she immediately came out, jumped off of her dock and started freaking out in the water like she was trying to hide. I finally got her calmed down by offering her meal worms and she started attacking at them to eat them which is also unusual because she grabs her food very easily. Is this a sign that something is wrong? She still basks, swims and eats (although she wont be feed for about 3 days now since she grabbed the mealworm container causing about 20 mealworms to go into the tank). She is normally very friendly and not agressive at all. Is she maybe going to lay another clutch of eggs?

Possible. I'd watch for other signs that would indicate she's gravid.

When you took her out, had she been behaving like she wanted to come out (like you had described on previous occasions) or was she just taken out quickly? If my RES isn't in the mood for being picked up, he let's me know it. It sounds like, at the one particular time you described, she was startled or felt threatened by something...

She wasn't begging to come out like she usually does but I had been holding her for like 20 or so minutes before I set her down. Maybe she was startles but it just seems odd to me that she is acting this way. She has been trying to bite me everytime I get near her tank too. I just hope she gets over whatever is bothering her and goes back to normal. I thought MAYBE her water was too cold for her since I didn't have a heater in her tank (the water was 72-73 degrees) so I went and bought a heater and put it at about 77 so see if that changed her mood. I will give her a few days and see what happens I guess.
