General Care Discussion :: Algae on plants?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I have noticed some algae growing on the plastic plants I have in the tank...is this normal or do I need to do something about it? Its just like wispy clear aglae growing on the plants. Do I need to turn the filter up, lower the water temp(its at about 81 degrees right now), or something else? I clean the tank pretty often, so I don't know what to do! Any suggestions would be appreciated!

You can just leave it. You should lower the water temp to 78 degrees if you can. When algae would start to grow on my plants I would just rinse and scrub it off in my sink.

Ok, thanks....another quick question...is it ok that my RES try to eat the plants? They are non-toxic, so it won't hurt them, and I do feed them daily...so are they just looking for an extra snack?

Is there a reason the water is 81? If your turtles are ill then it's ok to leave it warm for the time being.
If not, then lower it to 75-78.
I just scrub the algae off with an old toothbrush.

I was told that the water should be that high for baby RES...but it seems that I was ill informed, so thanks for the advice!
