I got both my res pretty much around the same time, they began doing the mating dance(lol) about a month ago, turtle (boy) keeps trying to mate with peeko lately but peeko wont pay any attention to him,

anyway the other night I was watching them and turtle kept following peeko around the tank trying to lock eyes, peeko went to swim away and turtle bit onto his face!!!! I was horrified.... should I keep them apart, it hasnt happend since but I dont want anything severe to happen.

This is a very familiar story. You'd better go ahead and separate them. Once they start this sort of thing they usually don't stop. One turtle can badly hurt another. We've seem some frightening instances on here recently. Usually the larger female lashes out at the pesky male but sometimes it goes the other way.

oh okay, I dont really have another tank and all the stuff to go with another set up. what I should I do in the meantime? I dont really wanna stick him in a container, but I def- do not want an injured turtle

Is your tank large enough to use a separator to divide it into two parts? Here's an example of what I'm talking about:
