General Care Discussion :: Underwater Current Strength?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I have 2 Maxi-Jet 1200 (295 gph) Powerheads that came with a used 110 gal tall aquarium I just bought. I was going to use either one or both of these powerheads to minimize any dead spots in the tank, but I was wondering, would the underwater currents be too strong for RES? Do turtles prefer more gentle underwater currents? Would this affect their sleep? BTW, I'm planning to run the tank with 2 Filstar XP3's. Thanks.

Depends on the size of your turts.
You don't want the currents too strong for your hatchlings, because they can get tossed around pretty easily. Bigger, older turts (I'd say 6"+) would be ok with the current. I've even seen Ralph "surf" the current a couple times.
On the same note, I'm sure your turts would appreciate a place with low or no current to sleep, especially if they're sleeping on the bottom of the tank. Imagine waking up in a different bed then you fell asleep in! :P

With the two xp3's, I don't think you'd need the powerheads, but I've never used powerheads before myself...

Rand R ---The mimimuM filter/pump for the 110 gallon tank is 550 gph and you have 590 gph. I have a 350gph on a 29 gallon tank and there is a little swirl and two ybs do just fine in there. I can assure that they will find a spot to rest and sleep as long as the flow is constant.
