General Care Discussion :: Little bubbles!

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

So I got one of those wands that puff bubbles out. The turtles seem interested, but it's kinda noisy. Thought it might be good, getting more O2 in there, also.

Anyone know if the bubbles would bother the turts? Or if for some reason a turt shouldn't have one of these?

Turtles loves bubblers. I have read stories of them biting at the bubbles and freaking out when they see them but in a good way. it is also good to keep the water moving around in the tank.

ki-coo -- Turtles like the bubbles and it also good to keep the water stirred up. You should put it in an area that gets too little circuation. It also helps your bacteria get more oxygen.

I don't have a bubbler in my tank because Sheba would (quite frankly) eat the thing (!). They aren't required.

Lots of people on this board have bubblers, and they are not harmful. Many turtles like it!

Great! Lily has not stopped turning all around above it, like a manatee getting a belly rub. Of course she insists on including in her laps the space between the plastic hosing and the wall, rather than ignoring it. She must squeeze into tiny places all the time, she is always "resting" behind any wires she can (heater, for example). Anyhoo. I put it on the opposite end of the tank from my output hose of the filter. Figure that will provide some good all over tank circulation.

One of the reasons I did this is because since I got the new filter, the pletco has been doing this odd thing where he swims to the surface and dives back down to his little cave. As though taking a breath. I figured fish are more sensitive than turts to oxygen levels in the water, and obviously the levels in my tank were somehow lacking... so why not correct it before the turts notice?

Oh it is SO cute. I just adore it!!! and so do they. Industrial girl, that was my concern: that they'd eat the little bubbler stick. But so far, they just like the bubbles. Yay!!! Happy turts.

Is the noise related to the bubbles or the pump? The Tetra Whisper Air Pump seems to be the quietest.

Kristin, they also have them as plastic discs too... and it does a great job with the water agitation.

I used to have the long 12 inch sticks that would stretch along the bottom of the tank- Harvey would swim back and forth all day along the bubbles. I redid the tank and now have the disc which is awesome too. I piled the river rocks on top to hide it.

My turtles enjoy their bubble sticks too. I have one of the round seashell shaped ones in Nyxies tank (alone with the one that runs the back of the tank) and she will float above the round one as if getting a massage! It is cute.
If you are having a problem with the air hose you can buy some of the suction cups meant for suctioning the hoses to the side of the tank, they do a good job keeping the hoses in one place.
