General Care Discussion :: Aggression

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

In Sparticus' tank, I had about 20 or so rosy reds and a medium-sized snail who was named Marcus. The fish gradually began disappearing, which is to be expected, and the snail went to town on the algae that grew in the tank and all was well. About a month ago, Sparticus seemed to become more aggressive, snapping at my fingers when I dropped his food pellets into his tank or just opening his mouth when I approached the tank. Last week the remaining three fish went "missing" and the snail looked like an anemone attached to a shell.

Sparticus is nearing the 3 inch mark, is it possible he's hitting turtle puberty or does he just have a mean personality?

I don't think there is a turtle puberty, per se. I think that they are just predators, and their predatory instinct will depend on environment/genetics/etc. Turtles are cute and cuddly, sure, they're cute, but not for cuddling. I think your turtle has just realized that he's king of the pond and plans on keeping it that way. I'd recommend never getting another turtle!! ;)
