Post a picture of your new tank set up when you are all done! Sounds like you are well on your way if you are getting a bigger tank, have a thermometer, and water heater.

I have a thermometer for the water, its usually 78-80 during the winter. I take it out during the summer. Should I unplug it for a while. Its the type that just keeps the water at 78 and shuts off and on automatically.

If you have an aquarium heater it should have a thermostate in itand should stay where you set it. You will have to use your thermometer to check on that.
