General Care Discussion :: Sleeping A LOt and Not Eating

My one baby RES, Shely, is doing great eating, sleeping, and swimming fine. No worries with her, but on the other hand my other baby Res, Jermey, seems to sleep all the time. He likes to sleep in the basking area even if the light is not on. He is not swimming much these days either. He looks healthy overall, but I don't think that he is eqting a lot. He use to be such a good eater. When I put the floating sticks in there, he looks at them and swims away. He might take a small bite, but that's it. I went out and bought some shrimp brine and he seems eat that a little more. I have tried to put him in a different container to eat, but he will not eat. It was after trying to get him to eat in a different spot that has had him acting like this. I'm not real sure what I can do for him at this point.

Should I try to find different things that he will eat? Has anyong elese ever had this problem? Any help for me would be great. Thanks

It sounds like he's sick. What's your setup like?

Shell-82 -- Under Urgent Care: Read the "Read this topic----" It would help to know those these items: such as, size of tank, size of filter, heater, lighting, temp, etc. These things are all related to your turtle health.

How do his eyes look - are they swollen?

Does he yawn a lot or breath with his mouth open?

When he swims, is he loppsided in the water?

Do you see any mucus around his nose or mouth?

You said he used to eat well until you tried feeding him in a separate container and then he stopped eating? Could he have gotten chilled by being removed from the tank and put into a separate container of water to eat?

What is the temp of the water and basking area? Was the water in the feeding container the same as in the tank?

How long have you had them? Did you get them at the same time?

I had the same situation. My baby just slept on the dock with his head down all day, wouldn't swim, or eat. I took him to the vet and since I didn't take a fecal sample and he was so little, it was difficult to diagnose exactly what was ailing him. The vet ruled out RI since he didn't have typical RI symptoms and treated him for parasites. Bingo! He was better the next day. Still weak but better. That was last month. Now he's healthy and doing all turtley things. I don't know if he would have made it if it weren't for the vet. I'm so glad I took him.
