General Care Discussion :: Fish food?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Sun Feb 24, 2008 12:50 pm   Fish food?

I got some feeder fish the other day and put them inside the tanks of my turtles (three each) and their to small and fast for my turtles to ketch them so I was wondering if I got some fish food and fed it to the fish so they get bigger and slower would my turtle try to eat it and would it hurt her if she did

It wouldn't hurt to feed the fish, after all, you probably don't want things dying in the tank. I don't know if they would get much bigger or slower, but if you keep them alive long enough, your turtles will eventually decide to eat them.

I doubt it would hurt them, but don't overfeed the fish either. Only put in enough fish food that they can eat in about a minute and scoop out any leftover. It will contribute to mold/fungus/algae growth otherwise. Eventually your turtles will catch them, it took my baby Mikey 4 hours of trying and mortally wounding his first fish, but he got him!

My son has a bunch of feeders & tetras in his tank & never feeds any of them. They can be seen picking at the gunk at the bottom of the tank and eating small pieces when the turts eat. IMO they help keep the tank clean if they're not fed anything else.

Id say it really depends on your preference. Not feeding the fish means they will be more eager to clean up after your turtle, and we all know turtles are messy little things. Feeding your fish fish food means they get easy access to food.

What I do with my fish (they haven't been eaten and have been in there for 4 months), is when I clean the tank and do water changes, I feed them fish food for the first day or so (as there are no scraps on the bottom to munch on) and when the tank starts to accumulate turtle left overs, I let them clean it up. Its an effective way to keep ones tank cleaner.

And just a thought Keith, wouldn't the fish waste in your horse trough not be to good for your horses to intake?

na my horses haven't had anything about it for over a few years now and when I first got my horses people told me about puting fish in there tank to clean the alge off the sides that horses could get infections over and they said that when they do drink that the fish waste is kinda like protein for them its a gross subject but thats what they said lol

I'm sure fish food would not hurt the turtles. All it is is dried plant and fish matter with vitamins and such added.

Yeah my turtle has been known to munch the fish food ( on the rare occation there is any left) it's basicaly made of the same stuff that their pellets have in it.

I put 4 guppies as feeder fish in the tank 3 mothns ago. Same thing the fish were too fast for the turtle to catch and now i end up having (due to births) 20+ fish!! If the turtles get really hungry they will trap the fish and eat it, but as long as the turtles know the "easy" way (dropping pellets) why to try soooo hard to chase them?

Anyway having fish in the tank helps besides eating the left overs and keeping the tank clean also as a good food reserve.
