General Care Discussion :: My RES acts so odd

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Sun Mar 23, 2008 4:45 am   My RES acts so odd

Dear all,
Hello,

It’s about two or three weeks that my RES acts so odd. When he sees us passing, he starts to dabble in water until we go near his aquarium and then he calms down. At first we thought that it is just a sign for us to feed him (because he did it when it was his feeding time and after we fed him, he relaxed), but currently his does this bizarre act every time he sees us. My RES size is just a bit larger than size of a mature person’s palm and he is about 2 years old.
Does anyone know why does he do like this?

Thanks

I think what you are describing is a typical turtle begging for food. Does he flail at the side of the aquarium, splashing water everywhere, with his nose above the water? That's pretty standard. When you go to the tank he probably calms down because he feels he's gotten your attention and maybe...just maybe....you're going to feed him. If that's the way he's behaving, then he's pretty normal.

That's exactly what my Ralph does.
He goes nuts whenever someone walks in the room, but if you walk over to the tank, he calms down. He seems to like watching "his" people. :P

He's excited to see you---he's thinking "food." :D

Dear All,
Hello

Thanks. At least now I’m sure that there is no dangerous thing involved.

The only 'dangerous thing' is giving in to feeding them every time you go by the tank! It's so hard not to - they can be so charming!

Our male, Baruch, holds on to the edge of the basking dock with his left 'hand', and smacks the heck out of the top of the water with his right if he so much as senses I am coming in the room! There are always water spots on the glass near the dock so I can never take a clear picture of him doing it. But, he just stops and turns to me with that turtle grin. That little permanent smile on his face is so cute!

Crazy turtles!
