Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Mon Apr 07, 2008 6:40 pm   Eye drops ; new plant added ; irritating eyes ; questions .

hey some questions please answer them with the numbers to show me which qusetion ur answerig^^

1. Turtle's eyes are closing every few secondsin the water and while basking, i just switcued the water yesterday and nothing like this has ever happened even before yesterday and yes i have turtle eye drops so do you know what type of a problem this is?

2. My turtle naps every few hours during the day since the water change i told u about above, is that regular? Or is it just tired or stressed? Is it normal? and when its asleep, her head shrinks down into her shell and makes her neck sort of wrinked? Is that right?

3. i added some new plants to the tank during when i was washing the tank for a water change, could the plants be irritating the eye? Yesteryda i added a new one and the eyes started irritating really badly so i took it out today but no improvement (at least i think) AND THE EYES ARE NOT RED*****

4. When the turtle's eyes are closed, i can sort of see through the eye lids its eye balls, can it see even thru its eyelids and is that normal for you guys?

The basking temperature is alright and water too yes heater no filteration sorry and the main thing im worried about are the questions above (is the plant irritating the eyes...why is my turtle napping so much unlike before...etc)

Please help! Im desperate *.* 's emotion: :(

What type of plant are you talking about? Plastic or real? And as for the napping, I've noticed that my turtle naps every few hours or naps while basking. I'm sure it's because there's nothing better to do. Napping isn't lethargic, though, just napping. I can't comment on the eyes, but hopefully someone else will come along! Oh, and I've never examined his eyes whenever he's sleeping because as soon as I get close, he opens his eyes to a slit and looks like, what are you doing disturbing me!

1. Don't know what type of problem this is. Is your water treated? If so, are you using dechlorinator?

2. Head retracted into shell with the skin overlapping sounds normal to me. Turtles sometimes nap during the day, even while basking. What is the basking area temp and water temp?

3. What plants are you adding to the tank?

4. Seeing the eyeballs through the closed lids (if it's what I'm imagining) doesn't sound abnormal to me, especially for a hatchling.

3. The plants are fake. From pet stores.

4. ok, good! Mines a hatchling so...:)

Yes, you should be using a water conditioner.

and fake pet store plants are fine.

What did you use to clean the tank? Any kind of detergent is a big no-no.
When you changed the water, was it cold water? It should at least be room temperature not ice cold.
You should really use some kind of water conditioner......and a filter.
Any new decorations should be confirmed as aquarium safe and rinsed thoroughly before placing it in the tank.
