The rule of thumb is a gallon of water per inch of shell. Your turtle at 4.5 in needs at least a 45 gallon tank.

It's advisable to get the biggest tank you can afford, because most turtles grow up to 12 inches, which will require a 120 gallon tank.

Craigslist.org and glassgages.com (if they're near you) are good places to find big tanks.

I think nettle forgot to put the 10 in.

the rule of thumb is 10 gallons of water per inch of shell.

I would shoot for a 55 or bigger that should keep you going for awhile.

I had a 55gal for a couple years now I have a 120 gallon and the turtles seem much happier. The more they can swim the better and more room means less fighting if you have that problem. Also the larger the tank the easier it is to keep clean. I have 5 tanks in my house the others are fish.
Raising turtles is very rewarding..
