I have two turtles. Male and female. My male has recently got this white stuff on his top shell and some on his under shell on the same side. The white stuff is now starting to show where my left thumb is. Also on his under side its kinda shiny on the same side as the white stuff. Is this normal or should i see a vet about it?

Looks like fungal/yeast infection. Fairly common to aquatic turtles with inadequate basking/water quality. Do a search, you'll find a ton of pics/descriptions and the recommended treatment option.

It's also highly contagious to other turtles, so you might need to separate them. I would act on the treatment before it gets worse.

i think the same thing is happening to mines too. some of the she;ll is turning white and starts to peel. even though i've never seen it before i still should be concerned

air-23 -- It is a fungus and needs better husbandry. It looks like the lack of basking temp and it ability to get dried off. The basking temp needs to be at least 90 to 91 degrees out of the water. Medicate and make sure he can get dried off when basking. M.

I went to the vet. She said it was his shell just peeling. Also that they where the healthiest turtles she has seen in a long time.

air-23 -- I am no vet, but I would make sure that your turtles gets dried off when basking and you may want to dry dock it two or three hours per day and watch your filtration,temps and lights. b.

Based on the picture I have to disagree with your vet. It will continue to spread and thicken without treatment.

From that picture, it certainly looks like you've done a good job keeping their shells healthy in terms of growth and the general shape the male's shell is in. However, those white spots certainly aren't normal and they do look a lot like a fungal or bacterial infection. Was your vet a herp vet?

I just read the spots came off... did they come off with you scrubbing them? At least on the left-most scute the spot looks like it's actually under the scute so I'm having trouble imagining it was something simple like a hard-water spot.

The next time you post a pic of your RES's shell, posting a pic of the shell dry would be more helpful.

the vet was a herp vet. and said he was having a hard time shedding. a couple days after i went to see her the white stuff was gone. i looked in the tank while i was cleaning it and found parts of the shell that had the white stuff. then went and look at him and saw that where the white stuff was there is a darker green color
