General Care Discussion :: Uhh...?

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Sat May 10, 2008 6:32 pm   Uhh...?

I have been googling up a storm today looking up anything and everything to do with RES Husbandry. I stumbled across SLIDERINFO.COM and I must say.. I don't even know what to think. Now OBVIOUSLY some of this is untrue. For example keeping your RES in a 10 Gallon tank. Most everyone on this forum knows the 10 gallons for every inch of shell rule. But what about this "Ecosystem"? Has anyone had any expirience? I personally wouldn't want to try it -- at least not without it having a following. This is the first I have heard of it. I have never heard of Guppies eating fecal matter. I had Rosie's.. They surely did not eat my turts waste. Is this sheer poppycock or a breakthrough?

There are quite a few tid bits of false info... But some of it I am not so sure of. Particularly a section of "Feeding" and another in "Diseases." In "Feeding" it says turtles will not eat all of their pellets. I have closely monitored my RES's diet because I always thought he would eat and eat and eat.. A member had once told me to feed as many pellets that fit into my turts hollow head. I BELIEVE Sliderinfo.com is incorrect on this matter. What do you think? Am i underfeeding my turtle? The website mentions Live Food.. Awfulyl high in protein.. and Barely touches veggies? Then in "Diseases".. I am not sure at all. It mentions that my turtle can get Salmonella from dirty water. Now of course I knew Salmonella is a threat to you or I.. But what about my turt? How is Salmonella aquired? I always figured it was something all turtles just had.

If possible maybe a few of you could look over the website, verify some facts? I know there is tons of inaccurate websites on the web -- is this site one of them? Or can any of this be true?

yeah....ignore that site. I don't know what the motives of the person who worte it were, but they were grossly misinformed about the care and needs of RES. They posted here a while back to "show off" the website, people replied telling them about the misinformation, but they weren't receptive.

I remember that person. Here's the post: http://www.redearslider.com/forum/viewt ... p?p=151333

And yes, their poor turtle!

Each website you go to, each person you ask will have a different opinion of how to take care of your turtle. You just need to modify one of the various methods to suit your turtle's needs. This board is by far the best I've found, but that doesn't mean that a turtle can only survive with good health following these rules. It's good that you can here to ask questions, you should look up those questions here on the forums.

You know, that person is/was a member of this forum, but I had to lock a topic regarding the "ecosystem". Everyone is entitled to their opinion and welcome to share their experiences but we try to draw a clear line on information that might be interpreted incorrectly and have other implications.
