General Care Discussion :: IM BACK!

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I must say, im glad to be back. i havnt posted since Flash(one of two turtles) died last summer. anyways, I work at petco, and a customer came in earlier this week with the whole family intially wanting to set up a turtle tank. i was more than happy to help answer any questions that they had being that i was the only person in my store who knew turtles like the back of my hand. Well, i educated these new turtle owners about everything and they were just shocked. Apparently they were told from a good family friend of theirs that sliders didnt need a huge tank setup and that a little 10 gallon tank with only about an inch of water will be fine. I asked how long their friend had this turtle, and this customer said that the turtle is about 7 years! i asked in a somewhat stern but still being polite why their friends didnt do any research on these turtles. My customer said that they got it at a vendor out in New York about 7 years ago and bought a turtle for their kids since they were told by the vendor that these turtles stay the same size all their lives. i was still like  while they were tellin me all this, but i wasnt mad or anything since it wasnt their fault. But in the end, they didnt buy a setup because i informed them on the supplies and care needed for a turtle, so they offered me their turtle and i took the offer. so now i have a 4 inch or so turtle, chilling in a 29 gallon tank, with the water about...4-5 inches high with 2 Whisper 10s, and the necessary basking lights. Ill explain why i have this turtle in a somewhat rough condition in another thread.

Hey, welcome back! It's nice that you're taking in a needy turtle, i'm looking forward to hearing more about him/her. Do you still have that awesome indoor pond?

Welcome back. I don't think I'll ever get surprised at the range of information out there. Good luck with the addition!

welcome back :). it's great that you were able to educate at least one family about the extensive needs of turtles.
