General Care Discussion :: Pee & Poo question

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Tue May 20, 2008 5:47 pm   Pee & Poo question

What color should the pee and poop be?
Our foster, Ichigo finally started eating last week, albeit only wanting to eat meat... and so far I have seen mushy creamy/yellowish stuff and very green stuff come out but not knowing what is what.
Sorry for such a newbie question!
Thanks as always

The pee in a healthy turtle looks like water. The color of the poop pretty much takes on the color of the food that the turtle's eaten. My turts recently had some pieces of red peppers, and their poop had bits of red in it (from the skin). Turtles that pretty much get a diet of pellets like Reptomin usually have darkish brown poop.

The consistency of Ichigo's poop (mushy/creamy) sounds like he could have a bit of gastrointestinal upset there. This is a really icky topic. :D

Thanks I will call our vet tomorrow and ask if we should come in again and describe what is coming out! I was definitely worried about the green........

Ditto what Marisa said. I've seen my hatchling pee once on his basking dock and what he did was he straightened out his tail and squirted clear urine. As for his poo, it's the color of the pellets he eats. His poo is about the size of a grain of rice.

well, she is currently only eating meat stuffed with pellets and whatever is coming out is creamy yellowish beige. we've had her about two weeks, first week she refused to eat anything and finally got her to start eating with chicken, salmon, shrimp.
called the vet today and she said since she is a good age and if she hadn't been regularly eating pellets or veggies her whole life, it will be hard to get her to eat them now and since she's been sick and not eating, for now it's okay that she is eating what she wants. she suggested trying to make some "meatballs" with grated and chopped up veggies in them so she'll get more into her right away. i might try that tomorrow. maybe her poops will become more normal if i can get more than straight meat into her.
the vet said the green stuff might have been whatever was stuck inside for the week or more that nothing came out. it was really crazy bright green, just once a few days ago, scary. so far no more of that, just this beige stuff....
i finally got some clean anachris today but she hasn't touched it.

If you are making "meat balls" with meat and veggies, you can try crushing up pellets and using them to help bind the meat balls and get those into her too.

thanks everyone.
i tried making the veggie and meat "meatballs" today but i definitely messed up and bought a coarse ground chicken instead of a more finely ground and everything didn't stick together as great as i would have liked. arg. i might have to give the left over ground meat to my dog and get a finer grind.
ichigo would put a piece in her mouth and try as best as she could to avoid swallowing any part with veggies in it. she was taking her front arms/hands and trying to push the veggie parts away. if i can get a finer grind that will stick together better i was thinking of trying bite size "dumplings" instead of "meatballs" hoping she would just swallow the whole thing with the veggies in the middle........... amazing what trouble we will go through.
also, funny thing was that she definitely liked the whole foods chicken better than the chicken i bought today at the japanese grocery. such a taste pallet...

Do you have a food processor? I'm sure you could get everything mashed up so fine in a processor that she'll NEVER be able to seperate the tasty meat from those troublesome veggies. She'll have to swallow some veggies despite herself!

I wish I had a food processor! I've been meaning to buy one forever..... I think we have a blender but that is a pain to clean and not nearly as thorough for this kind of thing. I will check freecycle right now just in case....
