General Care Discussion :: Abandoned female RES

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I posted this in 'other turtle discussion, also... thought it might be seen more here. If that is a no-no, sorry....

My daughter and I were at Petco today getting some stuff and saw a full grown female RES that someone had dumped. The story that I got was that the employees opening the store for the morning found her in a box at the front door.

I promise - this isn't the half or saddest part of it.

We got ours at Petco the first of this month and while their living conditions are subpar at best, ours looked OK. We were looking at her today, in this MAYBE 50 gallon tank with MAYBE 8-10" of water and 5 other RES, all probably around 4". She couldn't even 'stand up' straight and still be in the water and she was nipping at the other RES like crazy. One of the RES looked to have eye issues as they were closed and looked swollen.

If I could have I would have taken her home right then. Despite this, she was beautiful! Her eyes and shell looked really good and she had to have been 11" to 12", she was huge, well... huge after looking at mine all the time!

I took pics on my camera phone and I will try to get them up, thought they aren't very good for all the algae and who knows what else in the water.

So, anyone else in the Houston area that might want her or know of someone else that might, she is at the Petco at 646 and 45, the new one in the League City/Dickinson area.

I wanted to know - is there such thing as turtle rescues? Would the ASPCA, Humane Society or anything be able to help her and the others? I mean, it sure looks like cruelty to me.

The PetCo in my area (chicago) doesn't allow abondoned turtles in the same tank as one to sell. This is actually howI got my girl. I think you can contact someone about the one that was dropped off but I'm not sure about the ones for sale since they are the PetCo's property.

I live in Houston I can't take her in but I do know that the Houston SPCA does take turtles. They take just about anything. You can even file a cruelty report form their website which is www.houstonspca.com

This makes me so sad.
No Turtle/Tortoise Rescue in Houston? Try googling Houston Turtle/Tortoise club/society/rescue - - please file a report.

That sounds like how I got Frankie!
She was in a bucket at the local petstore, with about an inch of water and a bunch of dead gold fish...

I over-estimated her size, I figured she was 10", but she's only 8.5".
Maybe this gal's not as big as she looks. Hope someone can give her a good home!
