General Care Discussion :: RES eye color

My parents have 3 adult RES in their outdoor pond. These are not "pets" they simply live in their pond. When we were out there today we noticed that when one of them poked it's head out to look at us, both of it's eyes were blood red. It seemed to see okay, when we moved it dove back underwater. It didn't seem to be in any pain, or actively bleeding. After we moved away from the pond it did come out to bask and seemed fine. When the other two poked their heads up their eyes were the normal yellow and black. All of the turtles I've owned have had what I consider "normal" yellow and black eyes. I just thought I'd ask because it just didn't seem right to me. We are certainly capable of catching it if it needs a trip to the vet. Anybody have any suggestions and/or heard of such a thing??

Are you sure they are Red ear sliders? RES have Green eyes with black pupils.

Definitely red-eared sliders. And I guess I meant yellow-green eyes with black pupils. Most of the time they look yellow to me!

I've seen some with yellow, and some with very bright green. I was wondering what the diff was, maybe just pigment, like us I suppose. Red sounds pretty wierd though. Albino?

Usually red eyes are a sign of an injury to the eye. I'd contact a local herp vet and see what their opinion is. If you bring him into the vets and get something like an ointment will you be able to continually catch him to administer it?

Also, the injury may well be from the other turtles in the pond. Have you noticed any signs of aggression?

I have a oure slider and he has one yellow and one green eye

Eyes that are "blood red" need to be checked out by a vet.
