I would say the Rena Filstar XP3. It will not be too powerful for the tank you have now, but it will be plenty powerful for when you upgrade tanks in the future. That filter should handle up to about a 100 gal and still do okay, although I have heard of people using them on 110's and 120's.

Look around on Ebay or something and try to find a good deal. If you find one for about $115 you'd be lucky.
Also look in the online links section of the forum for tons of XP3 websites with good deals.

I just set up an eheim 2117 last night.

In spite of the spray bar incident - I didnt have it attached properly and it flew around spraying the room (oh my) - I am really impressed. It is about the same price as the Rena and nearly comparable in other ways. The main difference is that the eheim is not self-priming. I have never owned a large aquarium or a canister filter before and this was not hard to do. (I primed with clean untreated water so there was no chance of getting icky water - but still this is not a big deal at all) Be warned tho the instructions with this thing are worthless.

I went with the eheim mainly because the deal was great and the reputation is also very good. They are said to be very efficient and reliable. So far is it absolutely silent! I simply cannot hear a thing. My refrigerator is much much louder. If there wasnt a current in the water I wouldnt even know it is running.

Not having used another canister filter I cant comment on the others. But if you can put up with bad instructions and self-priming, this is a good one I think.

Eheims are said to be great. Just usually more expensive than a Rena or Fluval which also works great.
