General Care Discussion :: Strange Behavior

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Mon Jun 16, 2008 10:13 pm   Strange Behavior

I just moved my RES into a new tank and I noticed that while he swims underwater he opens and closes his mouth a lot, even after he's just taken a breath. I've never noticed it before (it may have been going on for a while or it may have just started) and I was just wondering if it's a problem or if anyone else's turtle also does this? He's acting completely normal and is looking happy and healthy. Thanks for the help!

I see my turtles do the same thing to some degree. Open wouth under water. Have you read through the health care section on my page yet? there is good information there on many different types of topics for res.
It could be a good place to start before more experienced owners chime in. I have had my three res for about 2-3 months now.

Mine does that a lot too. I think he's tasting the water ... As long as there is no open mouth breathing out of the water, you are probably fine.

How much open? Wide enough so you can see inside his mouth? Or just you can see his jaw moving up and down?
My guys do the latter all the time. I think Jax is right, they're tasting the water or something.

Yeah it's not like he's gasping for air. He just opens his mouth a little. I had never noticed it before so I got worried.

UNDERWATER opening/closing the mouth is totally normal. It's when they open their mouth ABOVE the water that it is a reason for concern.
