Healthy turtles shed both skin and shell, so a certain amount of shedding isn't a symptom of anything - it's just normal.

Are you curious about shedding skin or shedding shell?

Shedding skin looks like thin wispy bits floating off from your turtle's body, usually around the neck and legs.

When a turtle is shedding scutes they will tend to be sort of dull in colour and will perhaps look a little flaky when they're dry.

I wouldn't really consider these as "symptoms" since shedding isn't typically a health concern.

Also, DO NOT touch, peel, etc anything that your turtle is shedding.
Science rules.

I was able to get a pic of my turtle in the process of shedding a scute the other day, if that helps. I posted it in this thread, you just have to scroll down alittle...

Just use a super soft toothbrush, around 75 degree water (tank water might be best), don't do it too frequently, and be really gentle. Good thing you aren't pulling at anything!

Sylars kinda looks grey/whitish...I figured it was because I have really hard water.

That I don't know. :? This is the first time Sy is shedding. He seems to be shedding one scute at a time...so I think it's gonna take some time. We had some really fast growth in the first few months we had Sy, cause I wasn't here to supervise feeding. :( So Sy has some retained scutes. I think that the retained scutes makes it take alittle longer to fully shed too.
