Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Remy, my RES turtle I got about 2 weeks ago is doing a lot better. It surly is amazing how a simple change in tank size (by only about 5-10 gallons until i get a new one, and have found by the way lots of good deals. i will keep looking though) and an improved water temp can turn out to be such a big improvement.

first his old setup: when i first got Remy he lived in a tank smaller than a 20 gallon but larger than a 10 gallon, im thinking 15 gallons. he had less than an inch of water in his tank, which was filthy and smelly. it was COLD, absolutely no heat source for it, well, there couldnt have been, the water was way to low. Oh, by the way, Remy is about 4-4 1/2 inches long. Remy had no way to get out of the water and lived on tiny gravel, about as long and wide as a 1/3 of a pellet. he had no lights.

since i got him: Remy now lives in a 20 gallon tank for the time being. i know it is too small but it is bigger than what he had before and it is all i have until i get my new tank. he has a heater now, the water temp is 77-78 all the time. he has a basking area i built him but he doesnt use it for that, he just hangs out under it. but at least he feels safe, and he gets some use out of it  . he has a heat bulb that i had as a spare, but not a UV light at the moment. I am at my mom house now, but a few days ago i took him out for about 20-30 minutes outside for some sun. he seemed to enjoy it. I also put a water conditioner in there for him. and i water changes every week. not ful ones, but i remove some water and replace it with clean.

Remy eats reptomin pellets. i try to offer turnip greens on a regular basis but no luck yet. i have also noticed that he seems to have passed several of those pieces of the gravl he lived on, im not surprised he ate some. the original color was blue, this was brown, (im guessing it just got a little 'coating')but the exact same shape and size, and makes that scraping type sound when it moves across the floor like gravel does. that has to be what it is. im just glad he is passing it safely.

Remy is shedding both skin and scutes right now. im wondering if its no just coincidence that he shed about 2 weeks after having beter conditions or if the warmer water etc. has let him shed.

On my DC trip even though there were 4 people in the house noone thought of putting more water in the tank and it was almost gone, exposing the heater. i cleaned it up and filled it back up. it is fine, but im going to call them and make sure someone tops it off this time.

Remy is a lot more active in the past week. he comes out from hiding and swims around a lot more now, he is much happier.

thats it about him for now, i will keep updating, hopefully shorter next time, seeing as though i dont have t run through everything again.

You can probably lower the water temp slightly, to around 75 since he's adult sized. The lower temps will also keep the shedding at a healthy level and not an excessive level. It is probably due to the better conditions that he is shedding, but he needs 20-30 minutes DAILY of UVB and completely drying out to get a good shed done. Also, those rocks, scoop them out as soon as you can because he will likely re-eat them and continue passing them for some months to come. So be extra diligent.

It's good that you are giving him a better life, though!

Glad to hear he's doing well! Can you put up pictures of the basking area? We may be able to make some suggestions to make it more appealing to him. Keep offering him greens, and try some other veggies too. Thin sliver of carrot or lightly steamed pieces of sweet potato are favorites with turtles.

he doesnt live on those rocks anymore, in his new tank he has no substrate. the rocks he did eat before i had him looks like they are being safely passed.
about the temp, those are as high as they get, i meant to put that. sorry about that. it is a 100 watt heater so the 20 gallon gets a bit too warm. how can i cool it slightly? it has a thing on the top that lets me put warmer cooler type thing to change the temp but it takes a while to check the changed temp and i dont know how far to go. should i use that or is there a different way?

and about my basking area, i realized it wont work, at the time i didnt know they may munch on styrofoam and put it there because it floats. it gets held down though, but im not going into detail. he likes hiding under it tough. i will buy a cork bark piece from my pet store (which i have seen before) and put it in. how could i get it to stay in place without gluing it down though? i will use that tank for other things later on and dont want anything permanent in there.

Sounds good. A turtle that feels good is lively. Remy must be feeling better.

Some clever person on here attached some rubber suckers to a piece of cork bark to anchor it into place. Other people have gotten big pieces and cut them to size so they fit snuggly between the walls of the tank. Here's a copy of examples:
