i have a 5 inch res that has seemed to be mature and that its using the mating dance once in a while with its reflection. so i want to know is it possible that they can lay infertile eggs?

Any female at any time of 4 inches can lay infertile eggs. Just because she did the mating dance to her reflection doesn't mean she will lay.

Fluttering isn't necessarily "the mating dance". Fluttering can be a sign of mating or aggression. She may just be thinking she's seeing another turtle and wanting to fight it.

If there is no male present, the eggs will always be infertile and can be discarded if laid. Since you know you have a female, you should be at the ready with a nesting site so that she won't hold them in. Females won't always lay in the water when faced with no other option and the eggs can break inside her, causing a mortal infection.
