General Care Discussion :: A shell question (sorry there seems to be a lot of them)

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I got a RES last week and I noticed that at the edge of his shell near his head has cotton like fibers coming off it. I was reading the health section here and I think it may be fungus, shell rot, or maybe his shell is just peeling. He has a basking area but doesn't go on it yet and I am not sure how to help him.

the last link has the best picture of the problem.

You cannot see it too well but he has the string like fibers around the edges of his shell and also on the underside of his shell near his legs. I had to place him in a glass container to take the picture so this isn't the container he lives in.

Well, try to take a couple more pictures, there may be something called a macro setting or photocopy setting on your camera that is intended for closeups.

If it is a fungus, you probably should see a herp vet to get an antifungal treatment started. You can try dry docking him for a few hours each day to get him dried off completely.

It won't go away on it's own, so you'll need to take some course of action against it.

Yeah the macro button usually has a flower like symbol on it. Make sure that is on and then zoom as needed.

Is it attatched to the shell or to his skin close to the shell? It looks like skin shedding, but if it's coming off the shell itself then that's definitely not it. As well as trying to get some better pictures of it, get a few shots of his shell completely dry.
