Hello all
I am still fairly new to RES, and have not encountered the egg situation before. My 6.5" female (approx 3 years? not sure) definitely has eggs in her bottom that I can see/feel. I am not exactly sure how long they've been in there since I just learned to check for eggs yesterday. However, she has only been "digging" at the bottom of the tank for a week or two. Right now I have her in a large tub (indoors) with some dirt/substrate (not enough, going to the pet store to get some more) with a basking lamp. Once she lays the eggs I will destroy them.

My main question is: How will I know if she is bound and I need to take her to the vet? So far no signs of depression/distress. I am very concerned about this! Any advice appreciated. Thanks!

I noticed that my girl wasn't eating (normally a total pig) and spent most of each day basking. She was also digging on the platform.

It sounds to me like yours may just be digging for scraps. They don't naturally lay under water so I doubt that's really what's happening.

I was about to get my turt xrayed when she finally layed.

If she is eggbound, she'll most likely lose her appetite and become lethargic, more so as she becomes more ill.

If you think she's eggbound, and since you're concerned, I wouldn't wait until she gets to that point, though. Have her checked out.

She's been acting normal and active with no loss of appetite. I am positive there are at least 3 eggs in there. How long might it take her to lay them? She is now in the tub with 4-5 inches of substrate (eco earth mixed with calcium sand). She hasn't been digging much yet, since today is the first day she's actually been "out of water."

Some members have had luck with a bean bag on carpet for laying eggs. Of course, thats dependant on you having a bean bag chair lying around, but it's worth a mention.

Have you taken her outside in the yard? she may feel more comfy out there?

Unfortunately I live in an apartment, so I don't really have a "yard" although my fiance does (he also has 2 boxers). I think I will give her another day in the tub with dirt and see what happens then try something new. Thanks for the advice!!
