General Care Discussion :: Putting turtle out of its misery

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

"Meltedspork, i'm 14 and it's true about what you said, and if any of this has to do with the post about euthinizing my turtle, it isn't like we don't have enough money."

THERE YOU GO. YOU SAID IT YOURSELF THAT YOU HAVE MONEY. be responsible for ONCE in your life, GROW UP and take your turtle to a VET.

Wow, what in the world did I miss yesterday???

Okay, first, I do not condone putting any animals down yourself, even if a vet has said that they are beyond hope. We took a cat to the vet and was told that she had cancer and that we wouldn't know how much longer she would make it and to bring her back once she looked like she was suffering. After this grim diagnosis, she made it another 3 months before she started to suffer. The vet put her down. The entire process nearly killed my father, as he was the one to take her to the vet. I haven't often seen my father cry, but I did that day.

PcBuilder, frankly, I hope you live with the guilt of this whole incident for the rest of your life. ALL LIFE IS PRECIOUS, and you just want to throw it away. I agree that you should take the turtle to a humane society or vet, even if you have to declare that you found it. Maybe they can save it, maybe not. But at least the poor thing will no longer be in your possession. And while you're at it, take the other turtle too. You don't deserve to care for these beautiful creatures.

How did the one get sick? What exactly is sick? How do you know the other one isn't sick too?

This whole thread makes me sick to my stomach ...

Evidentley it was to sick because it died overnight!
So apparently it was sick enough so maybe I did know what I was talking about, and it isn't about the money or me not wanting it. The reason I wouldn't want it was because it was sick and there was nothing I could do but watch it suffer and die.

i completly agree with zoologist and TheComputerGremlin. its disgusting that you even thought of doing it yourself or having your dad do it. the least you could do is take it to the vet to try a heal it before getting rid of it. at least make the attempt to save its life.

Either way you all are going to be mad and griping at me but whatever, what happened happened, nothing I can do about it. I tried to feed it everything you all told me to except for boiled chicken and taking it to a reptile vet which would have been a 100 mile drive to it. And when I took it to a regular vet they said it was just stress and apparently they were wrong. And he was reading off some notes or something.
Anyway I tried everything "I" could.

Pcbuilder, my vet is over 3 hours away and i still take my turtles there for check ups. distance and money is no excuse.

you are in the wrong, and i think a lot of people here agree with me.

Except for don't actually release it into the wild because RES are considered invasive species where they aren't native and can screw withthe indigenous fauna of the area.

I realize this is too late but I was able to make contact with the Herpetologist at Texas A&M Texarkana and he said I can give you his email address. He said he is not a vet but is very familiar with many veterinary procedures and may be able to help you in the future. He said the vet that he knows of that sees reptiles is all the way in Shreveport so he might be your best bet. I know you still have one more turtle so I am going to PM you his contact info. Please contact him should you need assistance. He seems very knowledgeable and nice.

First of all - I am so sorry about the turtle. I would have hated to see it suffer.

Secondly, I think it is also sad that the seller (a petstore from what pc has said) is still illegally selling near hatchlings. While everything else may be hard to deal with - that is a real crime!

This has been a sad situation. There are a lot of lessons to be learned from it. People have made helpful and thoughtful comments and while we don't perfectly agree on everything, I think we can agree that a person taking responsibility for the care of an animal should plan ahead and be sure that the resources are available to do the job right. Unfortunately, sometimes we don't know this until it's too late, either because we lack information or lack experience.

I'm going to close the topic now because I think everyone has had a chance to make their comments.
