General Care Discussion :: help needed but not urgent

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Sun Jul 13, 2008 9:30 pm   help needed but not urgent

I need suggestions on how to give away one of my turtles. For those that have followed or read my few posts, I have three turtles, two boys and one girl. Yes she is attacking the other two. I have had various combinations to rid myself of the aggression but nothing has worked, as I suspected in the long run it would happen. Now I need to give away one of my turtles and am asking for help as to the different avenue's besides friends and families. I do have two tanks now, but it will be only for one turtle. p.s. Yes, if I had found this site first I would not be in this situation....
Thanks in advance for any helpful advice.

Where do you live? Most cities have reptile rescue groups that can help you find a new home. If you have a vet that you use for your turtles, I would try asking them if they work with any organizations that might be able to help.

You could try petfinder.com, but I must warn you that you get them crap spammed out of you and there are a lot of people who are savvy scammers. Note in your article that you will only deal locally and won't ship (unless it's close).

You could also try giving him to a humane society, but most places don't want an animal that requires so much work.

Do you have any nice relatives that might like a turtle? Aquaintences that you would trust? If you advertise, I'd put a price on the turtle. People appreciate what they have to pay for, and a price would separate serious people from those who might try to get him on a whim. Finding a good home may take awhile but it's doable if you are patient and persistent. What part of the country are you in?

I found my two Oscars a good home on Craigslist. Try posting an ad on there and see what happens. As Sportsmama said, put a price on her so you only get serious buyers. And make sure whoever buys her knows how to properly care for her.

You could try looking into a college or university also. I know my school has an "aquarium club" which upkeeps, gosh, probably about 20 different aquariums on campus. Also, some biology departments might have an interest in keeping her as a pet.

Thanks so far for all the advice and input on what to do with one of my turtles. It sucks to have to do this but is necessary for the health of all three involved.
Again, Thanks!

I'm sorry you have to give one of them up, but i'm glad that you're doing the right thing and trying to make sure your turtles have a happy life, even if it's not with you. I hope you find a wonderful home for the one you're giving up! Which are you thinking about giving away?

i know you would love to give your female turtle a good new owner, but if you cant i do know that a lot of people used to give their pets to my sisters pet store all the time. they would ask for some money but the cost would never be high, and most people just gave it to them for free. mind you, her store was a local shop owned by her and her boyfriend.

so im not sure if everyone does that.
again, i know that might not be in your best interest, but its worth a shot if none of the above works out for you

i wouldn't advise leaving your turt with a pet store. chances are most places won't take her and even if they did most pet stores don't know a lot about turtles anyway :/
