Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Crush has been shedding for about two weeks now and it seems like only the outer layer is shedding. He's shed about four of the scutes so far. He is 2.5'. He basks all the time and has a lot since we moved. He is eating everything in tank, well except the new minnows.

Hopefully this week if we can get an appointment in, he will be going to the vet to get his check-up and stool sample tested.

Do you mean the top layer or the outer ring of scutes (marginals)?

It can take a while to shed completely. Do any of the other scutes look like they're getting ready to come off (lifting edges, whitish appearance, etc.)?

When they shed, only the thin translucent top layer comes off. On my turtle, the scutes around the edge of the shell (marginals) shed first but the shedding pattern isn't terribly clear. Some of the top scutes shed before some of the marginals. The scutes on the plastron also shed. This year it appears it will take a couple of months for all the scutes to shed.

It's just the marginals that look like they are getting ready to shed and are shedding. There are about two on the outer ring that are lifting and one is almost off. It skipped over the one behind his head but that one looks like it should lift soon.
