Hello everyone.I have a question and hope that someone can help me out.
Okay right now that the weather is warm I have my 2 red ear sliders outside in their tank. When the weather starts to get cold I will be bringing them back inside in a back room in my house. Now the backroom does not have a heater so it does get cold back there.I will solve this issue with a portable heater. What temperture should the room be in the winter months?? I would not want my guys to freeze.I will of course have a heater in their tank as well.I hope that someone can help me.Thank You.

could you put them in a room that is heated? how cold does it get in that room?

As long as the tank water is sufficiently heated, and you have a heat source aimed at their basking area, they should be fine. Be aware of drafts though.

At night you can cover the tank with a blanket or towels to help hold in the heat from the water heater.

How cold does it get where you are?

I am in New York area where as you know it gets very cold here. The reason that I am putting them in the back room in the first place is for space reasons. That back room has plenty of space for their large tank.I want to place a portable heater in the room but I know it can't stay on all the time right?? Thanks everyone who has helped me out!! I love my 2 guys very much and don't want them to be harmed in any way!!!

Most of us are using submersible water heaters. Unless the back room is open to the elements during the winter, I'm not sure why this isn't an option.

No the room is not open to the elements. It is like what you would call a "Florida Room".I will be using a heater in their tank and of course a basking light. It is just a back room that is not heated. It gets cold back there.Just want to make sure all will be fine.Thanks.

gt-68 -- I would suggest the you get two heaters and set one at 74 degrees and one at 78. If the room gets too cold both would come on and if one fails the other would save the day. To help you can insulate the bottom and the back side of your aquarium.

It will probably be ok unless it gets very cold in the room - so cold that the water heater and basking light can't keep the temperature where it needs to be. You'll have to check the temps with a thermometer to be sure. Water temp should be around 78 for a baby turtle and 75 for an adult. Basking temp should be around 88 or 90 degrees.
