General Care Discussion :: Question

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

I've never come across this so I'm a bit worried. Is it normal that after a RES has been basking that they float at the surface or just under the surface of the water when they go back into it? I've been noticing this recently with the RES me and my fiance have.

Only if they are floating by choice. If it appears that they are forced to remain at the surface because they have what could be imagined as a bubble in their shells, there is probably a problem. Sometimes when turtles are ill for a time, they get an air bubble stuck somewhere in their shell/interior. I would monitor it for awhile, if it is an air bubble, it should go away within a week or two. Then the turtle should be able to sink easily. When you take the turtle out of the water and then set them back in immediately, do they still float? When they jump off of the basking area, can you push them down to the bottom and they don't "float" back to the surface?
