General Care Discussion :: Whats Better? Volume vs. SA:

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

So, as some of you know I unfortunately have to downsize my turtle temporarily (a few years). I have a 40 gallon breeder tank which is 36x18x17, and also a 55 gallon which is 48x12x21 (He is in a 90 right now). So the question is which is better? The 40 gallon has 648 sq inches, whereas the 55 gallon only has 576. So what is better? The extra length, or the width?

I would go with the 40 gal breeder and an above tank basking area. 12 inches wide just doesn't seem like much room for a full grown turtle to move around. I don't think the extra 15 gallons would really make that much of a difference.

I would also go with the 40 gallon breeder and above tank basking area. Wider tanks are better for turtles than tall tanks.

Greater surface area (length and width) for horizontal swimming is better.
