okay so i have 2 6" females.

when they're gravid..do they dig with their back feet?
or front?

i've noticed that one of them has been digging in the sand more
often and freaks out when she hits the bottom..
i always thought they dug nests with their backfeet.

is this a sign i should get a bucket of sand and dirt for her to lay in?

Back feet. You will need a large area for her to lay eggs (it needs to be deep, roughly the length of her shell) and lots of luck!
