General Care Discussion :: Speedy Possibly Gravid? *please help by Friday Sept 5th aft

Taking care of your turtle's overall health.

Post Posted: Thu Sep 04, 2008 9:51 pm   Speedy Possibly Gravid? *please help by Friday Sept 5th aft

I'm not posting this in the Urgent Care area because right now this is the best I can do, until tomorrow afternoon. (Friday, September 5th.)

Speedy has been less active in the past few days, so I've been keeping a close watch on her. Today when I poked her onto the carpet here she went around and around in circles, and then started digging in the carpet with her front legs. She then climbed up on my legs, (I'd been sitting right next to her) and appeared to be digging in the air with her back legs.

Immediately realizing she was digging a very strange imaginary nest, I wrapped her in swaddling clothes and put her in a laundry basket. (Don't tell my mom!) I transferred her to a small flowerbox on the ground, but she kept scrambling out of it. It's pitch dark right now, so I brought her back inside and put her in her box, (rather than her tank) with warmer water. She's sleeping now.

On either side of her tail I felt large round things, but nothing behind her back legs. Are those round things eggs or her butt? I've never felt her butt before so I can't really compare. They do move if I prod them quite gently.

Tomorrow when I get back from my first day of school, (a new school!!!) should I bring her out to dig? I'm sorry that this is a repeat question, I honestly read as many threads as I could but my brain just isn't processing things right now. Thanks for any and all help you guys can give!

You want to gently feel in front of the rear legs, not behind it or next to the tail. If the weather is nice, you can try to see if she has an interest.

Without knowing her size or age, it's hard to say that she could be gravid.

My girl just laid 5 eggs. She got extremely restless before she laid.

Same thing happened to my turtle. Before I even realized I had a female turtle, I noticed she was being very, very restless - way more active than usual. Then several days after that, she layed her first clutch. That's when I realized I had a girl turtle! My daughter got the turtle when she was tiny and deemed it a male, but was she way wrong or what! :P
