i know its not really a good idea to put two RES together but do you think that a res and a snake neck of the same size would be all right?

My vote goes for no. The problem with RES is that they are just aggressive turtles. They are aggressive to all species of turtles.
The next thing is that adding a new turtle to your existing RES's tank, your RES will almost surely see the new turtle as an invader to its territory and become hostile.

Also, I think snake necks have more specific habitat requirements, though I'm not sure.

Whatever you decide, remember that any new turtle should have at least a 90 day quarantine from your existing turtle.

I don't think it would be a good match.
Not only do snake necks have slightly different requirements (they like warmer water for starters), but they grow to be much larger than RES. While they may tend to be more docile, once your RES instigated a fight, it would be a bad fight as both are pretty powerful. Also on the size note, snakenecks get HUGE, and require huge tanks. Austin's turtle page recommends 150 gallons for an adult. When you add in the space a RES needs as well, you're talking about a lot of space to keep these two turtles happy. I just don't think you could find a happy medium in one tank, add in the good chance for aggression and I think it's not a good idea.
